Logistics Cluster: Situation Update – May 13th, 2015

Road Access Update

 Most major roads in the country are open. Village Development Committees (VDCs) can currently be accessed by road via the following routes:

o The Nuwakot / Rasuwa: Trisuli / Bidur to Dhunche road is open, however only small vehicles (4 x 4 jeeps) are allowed. Caution is advised due to risk of new landslides. It is not advised to travel the route at night. Relief vehicles should register with the police post in Kalikasthan before proceeding to Dhunche.

o Dhading: The gravel road from Dhading Besi to Tripureshwor VDC via Katunje VDC is open. However only small vehicles (4 x 4 jeeps) are allowed.

o Nuwakot: The gravel road connecting Trishuli Bazar/ Bidur Municiapality to Kintang VDC, Dhading district via Deurali VDC is operational.

o Gorkha: The road from Gorkha District Headquarters to Arughat (Arupokhari VDC) is operational and encompasses a distance of 43 km. The road from Arughat to Soti Khola (Lapu VDC) is also open.

 The following closures are reported:

o BP Highway connecting Bardibas, Mahottari to Banepa, Kavre district – Kathmandu. Road fractured in the Sindhuli-Nepalthok section of the route (54 km). Also landslide debris has been reported in different places of this road section.

o Gorkha: from 10 km, a place in Mirkot VDC-Chhepetar-Bhaluswanra-Warpak VDC section (36 km) is obstructed due to debris from a landslide caused by the earthquake.

o Dolakha: Charikot to Singati Bajar, Jhyaku VDC is open. However, the road is obstructed from Singati Bajar to Lamabagar VDC.

o Dolakha: Route connecting the Tamakoshi-Milti Khola road in Dolakha district has been reported closed due to landslide debris at Bhirkot VDC, Dolakha district.

o Dolakha: the main road via Khadichaur, Sindhupalchowk district, Mude VDC, Municipality, Dolakha district is closed because of landslide debris at Kharidhunga, Lakuridada, Dolakha district.

o Lamjung: Besishahar-Chame Highway (61.1 km) connecting Besishahar Municipality, Lamjung district to Chame, headquarters of Manang district has been obstructed at Taghrin VDC, Lamjung district.

Road access constraints

 In Sindhupalchok, the road from Chautara to Dolalghat (and onwards to Kathmandu) has been reported open. Blockages were reported between Dolalghat to Charikot. Assessments are on-going.

 The DfID/ GIZ Risk Management Office provided an update on the three road access constraints below:

o The Banepa Bardibas (B.P.) Koirala Highway, connecting Bardibas, Mahottari to Banepa, Kavre district – Kathmandu. The road is reported to be fractured in the Sindhuli-Nepalthok section of the road (54 km). Debris is also reported from landslide in different places of the road section.

o The road connecting Tamakoshi to Milti Mkola in Dolakha district has been reported closed due to debris fall from landslide at Bhirkot Village Development Committee (VDC), Dolakha district.

o The Arniko highway connecting Kathmandu to Kodari, Tatopani VDC, Sindhupalchowk district has been reported closed due to debris fall from landslide at Kharidhunga, Lakuridada, Dolakha district.

(12 May) As of 9:30pm, vehicles are moving again on the Araniko Highway, which was blocked after a house collapsed and fell on the road near Sanga in Bhaktapur.

 (12 May) Landslides have occurred on the (Sidhartha, Koshi, Arniko) Highways. Landslides are reportedly blocking the following highways:

Lamosanghu-Barhabishe section of the Araniko Highway.
o Khadichaur-Charikot
o Pasang Lhamu Highway, which links Kathmandu with Rasuwa.
o Rasuwa – Mailung
Dolakha – Singati
o Dhankuta – Karkichhap
o Syanja – Bhalupahad
o Ramechhap – Lakhanpur.
o Landslides are blocking roads to Dolakha which has cut off information about the most impacted area.

May (12) Chautara to Kathamandu (confirmed) by road was passable this afternoon: there are small landslides but no significant obstacles. In one stretch there was cracking on the downhill side of the road surface. Chautara town centre, where more buildings have collapsed, can be bypassed by a mud/gravel track to the east

o Nuwakot / Rasuwa: Trisuli / Bidur to Dhunche road is open. However only small vehicles (4 x 4 jeeps) are allowed. Caution is advised due to risk of new landslides. It is not advised to travel the route at night. Relief vehicles should register with the police post in Kalikasthan before proceeding to Dhunche.

o Dhading: The gravel road from Dhading Besi to Tripureshwor VDC via Katunje VDC is open (25 km).However only small vehicles (4 x 4 jeeps) are allowed.

o Nuwakot: The gravel road connecting Trishuli Bazar/ Bidur Municiapality to Kintang VDC via Deurali VDC is operational (35 km). It is passable for heavy trucks.

o Gorkha: The road from Gorkha District Headquarters to Arughat (Arupokhari VDC) is operational and encompasses a distance of 43 km. The road from Arughat to Soti Khola (Lapu VDC) is also open now.

o Dolakha: the main road via Khadichaur, Sindhupalchok, Mude, Charikot and Mainapokhari to Jiri is open.

o Sindhupalchok: Araniko highway between Bahrabise and Tatopani road is open. However only small vehicles (4 x 4 jeeps) are allowed. Caution is advised due to risk of new landslides. It is not advised to travel the route at night. Roads between Kathmandu and Melamchi are open

obstructed due to debris from landslide caused by the earthquake.

o Dolakha: Charikot to Singati Bajar, Jhyaku VDC is open. However the road is obstructed from Singati Bajar to Lamabagar VDC.

o Bhaktapur: Roads inside the main city are obstructed due to debris but in the process of being cleared.

May 5th, 2015: Updates from Nepalese Armed Forces – Road status

1. Sindhupalchok: Araniko highway between Bahrabise and Tatopani. A team of engineers from CHINA is opening up this road.

2. Sindhupalchok: the road between Kathmandu and Melamchi is obstructed by landslide at Tipeni Bazar, 9 km before Melamchi. This road is now open

3. Dolakha: Charikot to Lamabagar VDC.
This road is passable for 42 Km. From Dolakha to Gongar. From Gongar to Lamabagar it will take 2-4 months to open this up.

4. Bhaktapur: Roads inside the main city are obstructed due to debris but are likely to be cleared by evening of 3 May. Main road is opened. some inside roads still to be opened.

5. Dolakha: Charikot to Lamabagar VDC. This road is passable for 42 Km. From Dolakha to Gongar. From Gongar to Lamabagar it will take 2-4 months to open this up.

6. Bhaktapur: Roads inside the main city are obstructed due to debris. Main road is opened. some inside roads still to be opened.
